Leslie Pleasants of Statesville worked in healthcare for many years, including in internal medicine where she handled medical records.
After years of working in a doctor’s office setting, Leslie began caregiving which she has done for 10 years. While single and raising her granddaughter until last year, Leslie continued caregiving and volunteering.
The physical strains of caring for dependent patients began taking a physical toll on Leslie, particularly on her lower back.
An avid exerciser, Leslie has stayed active throughout her life. But the back pain worsened, affecting Leslie’s mood and dictating her everyday life. She became depressed and knew she needed to act.
Leslie recognized Iredell Health System neurospine surgeon Peter Miller’s name from years of handling medical records. She had long heard positive opinion from patients about the surgeon, and she and her coworkers often referred patients to him. When it came time to choosing a physician to see regarding her pain, she opted for a local physician she was familiar with who was easier to access than travelling to Charlotte.
Leslie appreciated Miller looking at her MRI with her on a large screen and thoroughly explaining details while making sure she could understand.
“He never at any point made me feel like I’m not going to understand what I’m going to do,” she said.
Leslie decided to move forward with surgery after learning about Miller’s extensive experience performing the surgery, and her confidence grew after learning that Miller teaches other surgeons how to perform the surgery.
She described her mentality going in: “I had faith,” she said.
After a successful surgery, Leslie is now back to her healthy self – participating in church activities, volunteering, and getting together with friends on the weekends. She is active in her women’s group, back to her exercise schedule, and ready to get back to work.
Leslie appreciated not only the patient care Miller provided her, but the personal care he provided as well.
“Not only do I think is he a remarkable surgeon, but he is a wonderful man,” she said.
